Meanwhile, Theranos, led by Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani, aggressively defended their technology and reputation, even amidst surprise FDA inspections and mounting evidence of malpractice.

The episode also introduces Dr. John Ioannidis, a Stanford professor who publicly questioned the lack of peer-reviewed evidence supporting Theranos's claims. His skepticism and call for transparency in scientific research contrasted sharply with Theranos's secretive approach. The narrative culminates in Carreyrou's publication of his findings in the Wall Street Journal, despite legal threats from Theranos and its powerful attorney, David Boies. The company's response was to rally its employees against Carreyrou, but the seeds of doubt had already been sown.
